This tutorial needs you to understand basic use of Photoshop.

Creating Seamless Texture From A PhotoYou can get textures from your digital camera or download from internet. But, in some cases, you need to tile them. This tutorial will show you how to create a seamless tileable texture using Photoshop. Then, you can use this texture to your 3D model or just apply as pattern in Photoshop. Definitely, this is a simple technique, but every 3D artist should know about it.

1. First, prepare your photo. Load into Photoshop. You can use image available below. Just right click to save this image.

2. For example, if this image used as a mapping in 3D application, the result is like image below (tiled 3x3). In every tiled texture, you can see seams. Our purpose in this tutorial is to get rid of these seams.

3. In Photoshop, go to Image>Image Size. Write down or remember you image size (in pixels). If you used example image above, you will see 400x300 pixels.

Image

4. Now, go to Filter>Other>Offset. Fill in Horizontal Offset=200, and Vertical Offset=150. Fill values about a half of image size. Make sure Wrap Around is selected.

5. You will get image like this.

6. Nex, click Clone Stamp Tool. Hold Alt button and click clean area outside the seams. Then click seam area to cover it. Use Clone Stamp Tool several times until all seams covered. Becareful when you use Clone Stamp Tool in area A-A or B-B. You have to use similar cloned area here. Also, try different brush size when use Clone Stamp Tool (just press [ or ] to increase or decrease brush size) when work with details.

7. When finished, you will get image like below. It is finished.

7. Image below shows how it is perfectly blend seamlessly in 3D mapping.

Final words, creating seamless texture image is very simple. Use Offset, and then Clone Stamp Tool. In some cases, Clone Stamp Tool is not enough to cover seams. You may need to draw, or copy area from another similar image.
