Simple Realistic Glass MaterialIn this tutorial I will show you how to create realistic glass material using 3ds max. Actually, there are many ways to create glass material using 3ds max. Here, you will create realistic glass material that not only quite realistic, but fast when rendered. This technique will absolutely enhance your scene. Simple, but powerful. No additional plug-in required.

1. First, download the required scene here. Open "simpleglass_start.max". In this scene you can find wine glass created using Lathe, also floor and wall. This scene is already textured using simple material. There are also several lighting to lit the scene. Try to render the scene.

2. Let's create glass material. Open Material Editor (click "M" in keyboard). Select one of unused material slot. Apply this material to wine glass by clicking and dragging material to object.

Glass material should have shiny surface. This can be achieved by adjusting Specular. In Blinn Basic Parameters, change Specular color to white. Set Specular Level=150 and Glossiness=30.

3. Glass material should be refractive. In Maps rollout, click None button right next to Refraction. In opened window, choose Raytrace. Then click Go to Parent button to go back to Maps rollout..

4. Try to render. You'll get nice glass material. Next, we will enhance the material.

5. In Blinn Basic Parameters, change Ambient and Diffuse color to black. Reduce Specular Level=120 and set Glossiness=40.

6. Render. This time is not too shiny.

7. Glass material should have reflection. Usually reflection requires a lot of time to render. but, here I only use simple bitmap for to simulate the reflection. In Maps rollut, click None button right next to Reflection. In opened window make sure Browse From: New is selected. Choose Bitmap and use "reflection.jpg" available in downloaded file. Then set Reflection value=5. White color in bitmap will make brighter and more reflective areas

8. This tutorial is finished. Image below shows finished rendering. Notice the vertical hightlight simulates the reflection..

Hi again
I applied the glass settings to a teapot and it looks really good. Now
I will have to make a background to make the reflections.
thanks so much!

I think the glass file is OK. Maybe you can open because 3ds Max compatibility.
The solution is to use newer version of 3ds Max
