This tutorial needs you to understand basic use of 3dsmax.

Modeling Apache Part 7This is Part 7 of Modeling Apache tutorial. This time, we will create tail rotor. The best part is we don't need to create from scratch. We can duplicate main rotor and use it as tail rotor. Of course, with modification.

50. De-activate all sub-object selection. Select main rotor object. In Top viewport, move it to the rear while holding Shift. You will get clone of main rotor. In Clone Options window make sure you choose Copy for clone method.

51. In Top viewport, rotate using Select and Rotate tool until duplicated object has orientation like image below. For easy rotation, you can use turn on Snap Toggle and Angle Snap Toggle..

52. Go to Modify tab. Activate Polygon selection. In Right viewport, select all polygons near main rotor like left image below. Delete them. Duplicated main rotor will have holes. You can fill holes with polygons. Using Border selection, select all border in holes. In Edit Borders rollout, click Cap button.

53. Zoom out the blades. Select all polygons at the tip of duplicated blades. Again, fill holes with Cap.

54. Now, we are going to connect the blades. Zoom in the duplicated blades. Change selection to Border. Select two border in opposed blades. In Edit Borders rollout, click Bridge button. The opposed blades will be connected with new polygons. Do the same process with other blades. Finally you will have 2 blades.

55. Change selection to Element. In Front viewport, move the blades to the right. Make sure one blade is in front of the other. De-activate all sub-object selection when finished.

Image

56. In Right viewport I rotate tail rotor -45 degree clockwise. I rotate because I want to be able to scale and modify easily. Using Select And Uniform Scale scale down tail rotor to match blueprint. Move the tail rotor to its position. Use blueprint as reference. You may need to use Select And Non-Uniform Scale to change the width of the blades. Finally use Vertex selection to adjust vertices in tail rotor if necessary.
