1. First, download 3dsmax exercise file (19kb, zipped, 3dsmax 8 format) here. In this file you will find box with wavy surface on one side.
2. If you apply technique describe in Part 1 tutorial, you will also get engraved logo. But, by looking from Top viewport, you will notice that its depth will differ from one point to another. Next, we will use another trick to create same depth for engraved logo.
3. Select text. Add Extrude modifier. Use default values (Amount=0). You will get a flat surfaced logo. Then add Subdivide modifier. This modifier is used to divide polygon into small polygon. Use default values. You may use smaller Size value to create smaller polygon, but it will use your computer resource more in the next step. Default values is more than enough.
4. With text still selected, go to Command Panel. Click Create tab and change drop-down list to Compound Objects. Click Conform button. Conform is used to projecting object vertices onto the surface of another object. In rollout, click Pick Wrap-To Object button. Then, click box in viewport. Scroll rollout until you find Update and activate Hide Wrap-To Object. Conform will create new object by default. We don't need this.
5. Now, your text is following the wavy surface of box.
6. In this step, we will create 3d beveled text. Right click on text and choose Convert to Editable Poly. In Command Panel, click Modify tab. In Selection rollout, activate Polygon selection. Select all polygon in your text.Click Settings button right of Extrude. Fill Extrusion Height=10 and then click OK. Click Settings button again. This time use Extrusion Height=1. Next, for beveled effect, click Settings button right of Outline. Use Outline Amount=-0.5. Note: Be careful when you set Outline Amount. Too high or too low value might ruins your text.
7. Image below show your newly created 3D beveled text (view from Top).
8. Apply boolean operation to those two objects (Subtraction A-B). You may refer to Part 1 tutorial if you forget how to use boolean. After that, watch the result. But, wait! Boolean result shows nothing. There aren't any engraved logo. Don't worry. Convert box into Editable Poly. Activate Polygon selection and select all polygon resemblance your logo. And delete it by pressing Del in keyboard. Now, you have engraved logo with the same depth.
9. Sometimes, when you delete polygon, there are hole in the surface of the box. You can fix it by creating polygon manually. With Polygon selection still active, go to Edit Geometry, click Create button. Click vertices one by one around the hole in specific order like image below.
6. Engraved tutorial is finished. Image below show rendered engraved logo in non-flat surface.
