This tutorial needs you to understand basic use of 3dsmax.
Someone asked me how to create an engraved logo. That's why I created this tutorial. Basically, it's very easy to create engraved logo. You just need to use boolean operation. First part of this tutorial explain how to create engraved logo on flat surface. If you already understand Boolean, just skip and go directly to Part 2. The second part explains how to create engraved logo on non-flat surface. Now, let's try Part 1.
1. Open 3dsmax. Create a box and simple text in viewport. If you are too lazy to create them, you may download 3dsmax exercise file (17kb, zipped, 3dsmax 8 format) here. Beside text, you can use your own vector logo. Just import your logo into 3dsmax.

2. Select text or logo. In Command Panel, click Modify tab. Add Bevel modifier from drop-down list. In Bevel Values rollout, use value like image below. You will have beveled text. If you use your own logo, use any values you want.

3. In Top viewport, move beveled text so that it intersects with box. Next, we will use boolean operation.

4. Select box. In Command Panel, click Create tab. Change drop-down list to Compound Objects. Click Boolean button. Remember, your first selected object is called Operand A. In boolean operation, you need to define other object as Operand B. In Pick Boolean rollout, click Pick Operand B button. Then, click beveled text in viewport. For operation, use default (Substraction A-B).

5. Now, you have engraved logo. Simple, isn't it? Below is rendered result.

6. Before, you have applied boolean on flat surface. But, how we create engraved logo on other surface like image below? Find the answer in Part 2.
