In this tutorial you will learn to create simple cartoon landscape using 3dsmax. You will create hilly surface, complete with road and trees. Nice scene for any cartoon movie. Although simple, you will use a lot of 3dsmax features here, mostly using Compound Objects. All these features will help you create this cartoon landscape scene easily.

1.First, we are going to create a hilly surface. Reset your 3dsmax. In Command Panel, go to Create>Geometry. Choose Patch Grids from drop down list. Then click Quad Patch button. Click and drag in Top viewport to create Quad Patch grids is a flat plane that can be modified into 3D surface. Quad Patch refer to patch grid with four vertices. Use parameters below.

2. Make sure Quad Patch is still selected. Right click and choose Convert To>Convert To Editable Patch. Go to Modify tab, activate Vertex selection. Then, you can move vertices up and down to create slope. Beside this manual way, you can also try another way. Don't move any vertices and don't activate vertex selection, but go directly to next step (3).

3. Alternatively, you can apply Noise modifier to create landscape. Select Noise from Modifier List. In Parameters rollout, activate Fractal to make noise effect more random, and increase vertical strength (Z) = 50. If you are not satisfied with the result, you can try to change Seed value. By changing Seed, you can have other shape for landscape.

4. Finally, you can add Camera to the scene. Activate one viewport for camera view (press C in keyboard).
